Amy
Kates specializes organization
design. She is the co-author, with Jay Galbraith and Diane Downey,
of Designing Dynamic Organizations, a book focused on
designing reconfigurable and flexible organizations. Amy
has over ten years of experience in organization
effectiveness, executive development, and human resource
strategy and structure.
Ms. Kates works
with leaders and their teams to assess organizational issues,
reshape structures and processes, and build depth of management
capability. She is a skilled diagnostician and designer and helps
her clients to understand organizational issues, the options and
their implications, and to make sound decisions.
She is an
accomplished business writer and is frequently asked by clients to
develop case studies, position papers, communication strategies
and presentations. In addition, she often works with clients on an
individual basis to help them understand their impact on others,
shape their message and improve their influence skills.
As a skilled
facilitator, trainer, and executive coach, she has consulted to a
wide range of clients including Citigroup, Marriott International,
Goldman Sachs, Robinhood Foundation, MetLife, Cadbury/ Mott, Ernst
& Young, UN Office for Project Services, Cendant, Invensys,
Fidelity Investments, Ford Foundation, and Deutsche Bank.
Ms. Kates holds
a Master’s degree in City and Regional Planning from Cornell
University. Prior to joining DDA, Ms. Kates was a planner and
urban designer and was selected to serve as an Urban Fellow by the
NYC mayor’s office.
Amy Kates is a
co-author, with Jay Galbraith and Diane F. Downey, of the book,
Designing Dynamic Organizations: A Hands-On Guide for Leaders at
All Levels (AMACOM, 2001). She is on the Board of Directors of
the Organization Design Forum.
In addition to
her consulting work, she teaches Organization Design in the
Executive MBA program at the Technical University of Denmark.
